What is a clear employee background check and how to obtain it?
The necessity of background checks was reviewed with, and agreed to, by a group of
your peers. It was added to the PFF qualifications as a means of strengthening the integrity of the
individual member. It proves to the client and employer, present and future, that they are dealing with an
individual that is beyond reproach in terms of honesty, integrity and moral character. CIFFA strongly
believes that the background check process enhances the stature of the PFF.
The costs of the background check divided over the period of its validity makes it very reasonable related
to the confirmation that it represents and we as CIFFA do not consider submitting to a background check as
being detrimental to applying for membership as a PFF.
Transport Canada's future requirement to have all individuals handling air cargo (see PowerPoint slide) to
submit to a background check is an entirely different matter. They are dealing with a security issue and
background checks will be only one of many ways that Transport Canada will secure the supply chain and
make us all feel a little safer.
In our opinion it will include all individuals having access to air cargo, cargo routers, raters,
dispatchers, cartage people, warehousing/distribution and even manufacturers, basically anyone that can
influence the movement of cargo, including senior administrative staff will be subject to these checks.
This requirement will move across all modes of transport, it is really just a question of time.
We can assure all applicants that such information remains strictly confidential between them and the
party that performs the check on their behalf, we at CIFFA receive no information whatsoever, the security
firm confirms to them that they have passed or failed the check, they in turn inform us. The only way that
we would be provided with information is if the individual signs a “release of information document
“authorizing them to release the information to us. As you are aware there is a Privacy Act that is LAW
and everyone that is the holder of personal information must comply with this act or suffer severe
penalties in the event of a breach.
