Air Dangerous Goods

Airlines carry dangerous goods in the cargo holds of their aircraft everyday. Due to the temperature, pressure, and vibration considerations, and the potential for a catastrophic incident, the carriage of dangerous goods by air is strictly regulated. Even items that may not initially be considered dangerous goods may be hazardous ("hidden dangerous goods"):

It is essential that everyone who deals with any cargo (whether it is initially thought to contain dangerous goods or not) is properly trained to look for these "hidden dangerous goods", and to ensure the whole supply chain is made safer. Even if a company does not deal with dangerous goods, they should have some of their staff trained to recognize potential dangerous goods in their cargo.

Not having properly trained staff can have disastrous results: May of 1996, a ValuJet DC-9 crashed in the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 passengers and crew. The cause ... staff not trained on dangerous goods, resulting in the incorrect shipping of about 100 chemical oxygen generators, shipped as "aircraft parts" ... not declared as dangerous goods. Unfortunately, there are many other examples of dangerous goods causing accidents, due to improper training or not following appropriate procedures.

Because of similar incidents, and to make air travel safer, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) developed a set of regulations to assist airlines in carrying these products. The regulations are updated every January, and reflect changes in the recommendations from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United Nations (UN Committee of Experts), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

CIFFA is an IATA Dangerous Goods Accredited Training School, and as such meets its stringent requirements and high standards, and also meet the requirements of the Canadian Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations. Our training programs are designed to meet the needs of three groups of employees: Freight Forwarders, Shippers/Importers/Exporters, and Airline Cargo Acceptance Agents.

Additionally, CIFFA participates in, and represents the transportation industry in the following organizations:

What this means to our participants, is that CIFFA has high quality training programs that are current and relevant to the transportation industry.

CIFFA presently offers three Air Dangerous Goods Training Programs:

A Training Certificate will be issued to each successful participant in our Air Dangerous Goods Training Programs.

Please note that Canadian law requires training for persons dealing with Dangerous Goods:

TDGR 6.1: "A person who handles, offers for transport or transports dangerous goods must

(a) be adequately trained and hold a training certificate in accordance with the Part; or

(b) perform those activities in the presence and under the direct supervision of a person who is adequately trained and who holds a training certificate in accordance with this Part."

Anyone who fails to comply with the TDGR, including the above-mentioned training requirements, may be in violation of Canadian law, and are subject to legal penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
