CIFFA e-Learning

CIFFA Ocean Dangerous Goods e-Learning is here!

As of October 2005, CIFFA no longer conducts classroom-based Ocean Dangerous Goods training programs.

All CIFFA Ocean DG training is done via e-Learning.

Start the CIFFA Ocean DG e-Learning Program anywhere, anytime … the choice is yours.

Why e-Learning:
Given the geography of Canada, it is difficult to deliver classroom-based learning in all the cities where our Members have offices, resulting in training not being offered in some locations.  This may create a training deficiency for some of our Members, which is not acceptable to our Members, nor to CIFFA.  CIFFA’s e-Learning solution can help remedy this deficiency.

Effective with the launch of our Ocean DG e-Learning Program, CIFFA will no longer offer classroom-based Ocean DG Programs.

Definition:
CIFFA’s e-Learning will utilize electronic technologies to deliver and facilitate individualized, comprehensive and interactive learning, anywhere at anytime.

Benefits of CIFFA e-Learning:

1.  Training anywhere, anytime.
Learners do not have to wait for a scheduled course.  They can proceed where and when it is most convenient for them.

2.  Students can proceed at their own pace.
Students can move through the material as quickly or as slowly as their skill and knowledge level dictates.  Some students will move through the material quickly, other students will take more time, and can review the material several times if needed.  In essence, it becomes "individualized" training for each student.

3.  Elimination of travel expenses.
No travel costs to participate.

4.  Consistency of training material.
Every participant gets the same information.  Sometimes different classroom instructors put a different spin or level of importance on certain topics, which may result in participants getting different messages in different classes.

5.  Increased retention of learned material.
Good e-Learning has graphics, audio, quizzes and testing, which allows learners to obtain a stronger grasp of the lesson.  Different types of learners are accommodated in the same e-Learning program.

Ocean DG e-Learning Programs:
At present, an Ocean DG e-Learning Program is available for Freight Forwarders.  Soon to follow will be an e-Learning Program for Shippers and an e-Learning Program for General Awareness. In addition, these 3 e-Learning Programs will be translated into French.

NO MORE INITIAL OR RECURRENT/REFRESHER PROGRAMS!
Because e-Learning is “individualized” for each student, there is no longer a need for separate “initial” or “recurrent/refresher” training programs.  It doesn’t matter how much time a student takes to acquire sufficient skills and knowledge to become proficient in Ocean Dangerous Goods and more specifically the IMO DG Code, as all students must successfully complete a similar performance-based Exam at the end of the Program.

It is estimated that persons without previous Ocean DG training may take 7 to 9 hours to complete the e-Learning Program, while students with previous Ocean DG training may only need 3 to 5 hours. Of course, these are estimates only and individuals may take as much time or as little time as they need for comprehension of the topics.

CIFFA will issue successful participants a Training Certificate.

CIFFA e-Learning Methodology
We have taken a very interactive and modularized approach to our e-Learning Program. To ensure a high-level of comprehension, our Program was designed with the following approach:

  • Presentation … new skills and knowledge will be presented in an interactive style
  • Application … students will have many opportunities to apply their newly learned skills and knowledge
  • Feedback … students will receive feedback to ensure learning takes place
  • Confirmation … evaluations will confirm learning

Most of the above topics will contain the following elements:

  • Introduction … Overview and objectives
  • Lesson(s) … Presentation of new skills and knowledge
  • Practical Application … How the new skills and knowledge relates to a real-life situation
  • Exercise(s)  … Non-graded practice using the new skills and knowledge
  • Evaluation … Graded exercises to confirm learning has occurred
  • Conclusion
