Dear Minister Tassi,

On behalf of the membership of the Canadian International Freight Forwarders we are writing to express our appreciation for your prompt action to address the work stoppage in the Port of Montreal.

As you recall, we have communicated often with your office and your Cabinet colleagues over the last few months, expressing our concern about the implications of a strike in the Port. Neither the port nor the shipping industry has entirely recovered from the disruptions of the last strike in August of 2020. The impact of another protracted stoppage would be extremely serious.

We understand that a decision to legislate in such situations is one that you and your department do not come to easily. It was evident that you employed all the measures available to encourage a private sector solution to this dispute before tabling legislation.

Nonetheless, the fragile state of the Canadian economy makes it essential that this vital transportation hub not be idled at this time. The sacrifices all Canadians have been forced to make, and the huge expenditures your government has announced, are all part of the price we are paying to combat Covid 19’s impact on our economy. We cannot afford to have impediments to our recovery and it is to your credit that you have recognized this.

With best wishes,

Bruce Rodgers                  Executive Director, CIFFA

Julia KuzeljevichPublic Affairs Manager, CIFFA
