This comprehensive whitepaper examines how Environmental, Social and Governance principles can be embedded into organizational decision-making, with governance positioned as the foundation for effective sustainability practices. The paper outlines how to align ESG accountability at the executive level, integrate ESG risks into enterprise risk management, and strengthen transparency through measurable reporting and stakeholder engagement. It also explores regulatory developments such as Canada’s Bill S-211 (Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act), Bill C-59 (anti-greenwashing provisions), and global frameworks including the UN Global Compact, OECD Guidelines, and ILO Conventions. Know Your Shipper (KYS) Guidance for Freight Forwarders CIFFA’s Know Your Shipper (KYS) Guidance provides a recommended best practice framework to help freight forwarders better understand the identity, legitimacy and compliance posture of their customers. Designed for use during onboarding, periodic reviews, or when risk indicators arise, the guidance supports teams across sales, operations, customer service and compliance. In an era of heightened regulatory scrutiny, strong KYS practices help reduce exposure to fraud, sanctions violations, trade-based financial crime, and mis-declared cargo. Beyond compliance, the framework helps safeguard operational integrity, protect reputations, and ensure alignment with international trade and security expectations. The document offers practical due diligence recommendations to strengthen compliance foundations and reduce business risk. Members are encouraged to explore these and other tools available through the CIFFA Resource Centre to stay informed, compliant and competitive in today’s complex global trade environment.
